FREDERICK AMATEUR RADIO CLUB MINUTES
November 19, 2003
The November 19th meeting of the Frederick Amateur Radio Club was called to
order by FARC President, Scott, N3OK. After introductions, Scott asked if
there were any upgrades or new hams in the group and none were reported.
The minutes from the August meeting were approved.
Nominating Committee:
Eric - N8AAY and Doc - KA3KZH were appointed to the nominating committee to
provide a slate of officer nominees in the January meeting.
ARES/Races Update
Eric - N8AAY discussed the Maryland/DC Section Level planned disaster drill
scheduled for 12/10/03 at 8:00 a.m. and indicated that he needed at least
10 operators for the drill. Eric also discussed ARES working on an MOU
with the Salvation Army for support services. That agreement will bring the
number of served agencies in Frederick County up to three.
Eric asked the club to consider covering the out-of-pocket expenses
incurred by Mike Staley to install a VHF station for FMH, one of the served
agencies. Eric moved for approval in the amount of $177.56 and the motion
was seconded by Jackie - WB3KDS. The motion passed unanimously.
Station and Operating Activities
Jeff - KB3FIO discussed the club's new duo-bander VHF rig, that it was
installed and operating well. The club participated for the first time in
the MD QSO party and placed well. The antennas survived the recent storms.
If any members have past certificates for contests or awards for the club
station activity (K3ERM) they are requested to get them to Jeff for framing
and posting at the station location.
Eric - N8AAY reported continuing problems with the 448.425 repeater and we
are trying to get it back on the air at least on low power.
Doc - KA3KZH reported on efforts to identify a suitable generator for
purchase. Considered the 1000w and 2000w Honda portable generators and the
club approved the purchase of the Honda 2000 watt generator at an estimated
cost of $999.00. Motion was made by Jim - K3DQ and seconded by Eric -
N8AAY and passed unanimously.
The members in attendance then enjoyed a very informative presentation by
Phil Karras, KE3FL, covering various battery types, charging systems,
reliability, expected life and the pros and cons of the different types.
The meeting adjourned at 8:30 p.m.
Respectfully submitted
Scott, N3OK, President
