Bud,
Here's what I've gotten done so far - using windows to get a basic working
system up.
agwpe, paclink AGW, and winpack up and running on win2K laptop
using sound card as tnc
using 45w txcvr
5/8 wave vertical 30' agl
can be considered a "portable packet station" including ant/mast if necessary
Next steps on the windows laptop: paclink postoffice, telpac node?
I'll need some addressing info, plus user/pw info for a destination telpac
node. Who / where should I go for that?
Is there a recommended user/pw for inbound telnet (send to me privately if
necessary)
Is there a vhf entry/exit point into YOUR PMBO for testing? (or general use
even), or do you only use that (vhf side) for emergency comms? Or should I
test with the "main" winlink site?
Is -10 still the recommended ssid for telpac?
On that note, are -4 and -5 still recommended for the "digi" and "local user
access" sides of a switch/node? (Remember, it's been 10 yrs since I last set
up nodes, something might have changed!)
If my questions have answers that are documented somewhere, just point me
there and I'll look myself - no need to repeat stuff thats already
available...
Now that this is all up and running and I can put packets on the air, Ill be
working on getting the linux boxes going on first: basic linux sound card
packet stations, second fpac node.
Unless there are other things you think I should focus on. I do this stuff
because I have fun and learn doing it, yet still want my efforts to
contribute to the "big plan" whenever possible.
Dave KO3O is just about there too with his station, but when he went to
"on-air" testing and switched rigs, water came out the end of the coax so
he's busy taking care of that.
To refresh your memory (if it needs refreshing) here are the initial
recommendations you provided:
AGW Packet Engine (Free version is all most of us use.)
Paclink AGW - the 'terminal' program used with AGW PE.
Pacllink Post Office - the mime file manager to allow the paclink AGW machine
to act as the e-mail server to the Outlook Express ham radio e-mail accounts
on the local machines on the computer LAN.
Telpac node - this is what needs to be on several machines around the ham
radio LAN to bridge connected packet users to a PMBO thus to the
internet. It is not necessary for every member to run a Telpac node.. but as
many who can on a 24/7 basis from home will help a lot. There is also a
LINUX version which the LINUX gurus on the FADCA e-mail reflector can help
you with.
MS .netframework (if you don't have it on the windows machine.)
