"Evans,
What do you want to install, a switch or a BBS?
With regards to the network the layered network is a open
network and in fact will pass other protocols through it with
no problems. In fact the next major phase of the network is to
move the switches to LINUX FPAC which will also give us other
protocols to play with at the switch sites (IP, NetRom and I
think a open version of Flex) I am at this moment working on
getting a machine set up to play with so I can learn how to
install all of the bits and pieces that are needed to make a
LINUX switch do it's magic."

"Hey Chuck, Prefer a BBS for NTS, but I like your Linux thought 99% over
anything else.
as far as frequency, we have a dedicated local KPC node / digi in Bartow and
use it
as nothing more then a digipeater (un via cq, wc4pem) and just keyboard
through it.
I would like to take one of those KPC's and put TheNET in it since I deal
with one myself for AFMARS.
You tell me what would be best. I can bring the PC to you or you can come
over to Polk in two weeks to
my ARES meeting and get it then, (meeting is in Bartow) either way, let me
know......"
Now bud's turn!
Evans- Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner - Sunday was a zoo around here
(we have a new dog with three cats who say they were here first!)
At Hamcation we discussed the need for an FPAC switch/LAN at Bartow - once
in place that should link to the new Clermont Switch and to Tampa thus
giving us a cross state link from Tampa to Orlando/Melbourne/DAB. Gary has
a contact in Polk County for this purpose (I think the site is on/near the
airport.) What I suggest is that you consider managing the network FPAC
switch at Bartow. You've obviously got the packet and computer experience -
all it takes after that is some hardware and a site!
Gary and Chuck can give you a lot of help early on and we've already
discussed having a FADCA meeting on a weekend in Bartow to help with
installation! Several of us can come over and provide manual labor as well
as packet and FPAC experience to get it going if necessary.
I understand Gary has recently started a new job, so I'm not sure how much
time he may have right now - but between the rest of us here on the FADCA
e-mail reflector, I'll bet we can get you going pretty quickly with more
advice than you'll need! Maybe Gary can find time to get the contact made
and you can take over from there.
I suggest you get first with Gary to be able to meet the ham contact there
who might get us a site on the Bartow airport. Also, if you have a better
site to link between Tampa and Clermont that should be considered. Clermont
is an extremely elevated site (500+ft msl), and I believe the Tampa target
is on a 19+story building.
If you get a DOS FPAC running between Clermont and Tampa that would get the
link made and as soon as Chuck beats the LINUX version, many of us will just
move to that platform, probably using the same OLD SLOW computers! The
radio hardware is all the same.
TheNet and other X-1J type nodes do not mix well with FPAC. We have to use
one now to get between Orlando and Melbourne and will be dumping it as soon
as the Orlando Switch is moved. We also have another one in the way
(needed) in the JAX area which will be by-passed as soon as another FPAC is
installed in that area. I recommend you spend your efforts on FPAC - but
you'll need three TNCs, and three radios in addition to the computer.
You'll need a 2M LAN radio, and likely two UHF radios for the trunks. What
would be neat would be for your locals (AREC?/ Radio club?) to help out with
expenses - but all this need not be expensive.
I've been promoting the re-furbishing of the Layered Network for five years
and now a switch between Clermont and Tampa is now the highest priority!
The cross-state link across Central Florida has been slow coming - but we
are almost there. The X1-J test at Clermont should be full FPAC before the
end of this month, perhaps even within the next two weeks
Go for it!
Help is as close as this e-mail reflector.

bud N0IA
