Virgil - I'll respond in more detail as time permits...
Meanwhile... there seems to be a lot of variables in your problem.. so start
here with the receiver set up and let me know more..
1. Where in the radio are you getting the audio (RXA) for the TNC?
(Speaker? Data port?) Can you hear the speaker when you are running packet?
Can you turn the volume down to not hear the speaker if you like and still
run packet?
If the DCD/RCV LED on your TNC is ON when there is no packet signal, see if
the TNC cmd: CD is set to internal. If so set it to soft and the LED goes
off.
If that doesn't help -
2. Start with TNC cmd: CD internal
3. Set the volume control on the receiver for normal listening level on
voice. Have the squelch on to quiet the speaker when there is no signal.
4. W/o any incoming RF signal to the radio (antenna can be on, just go to a
frequency where there is no activity)
Open up the squelch all the way leave it there until later.
5. If the DCD/RCV LED on the TNC does not come on you may not have any RXA
going to the TNC
5a. If the DCD/RCV LED on the TNC comes on, turn down the Volume control.
If you can turn it down all the way and the LED does not go OFF then it
makes no difference where the volume control is set for Packet. You can set
it for comfortable listening to the Packet Racket or keep it down to not
hear it.
5b. Set the TNC cmd: CD soft - the DCD/RCV LED should go out. If this is
the case, you should run your packet operations with the squelch wide open
for optimum packet sensitivity.
5b. If turning the volume control down turns off the DCD (with cmd: CD in
internal) then you must set the volume control to a nominal level for the
TNC. Here is how with normal radio noise w/o signals- Put TNC cmd: CD
internal
A. With the squelch full open and the DCD/RCV LED on, turn the volume
control down until the LED goes off.
B. Then start turning the volume control up until the DCD/RCV LED comes on.
C. Turn up the volume a tad more (say two hours on an analog watch face)
D. Now turn up the squelch until the DCD/RCV LED goes out. Turn the
squelch up just a tad more so that the LED will not light on occasional
noise.
This is where you want to run the receiver section when on
packet. (You may have to put a pillow over the speaker if it is on!)
If you are taking RXA from the speaker jack and that silences the speaker,
then after setting the volume control as above, open the squelch all the
way, and use TNC cmd: CD soft - the DCD/RCV LED goes out, and your set up is
max sensitivity for
packet.
