Russ:
(Your message to which I am replying was not posted to the FADCA list.. just
to JAXBBS (Willy3jax) and me.) I've elected to place my response (and your
original) back on the forum - I trust that is okay!)
N4SS Classic Winlink in Pensacola is not on vhf packet because there is no
packet network/BBS through/with which he can exchange data. I think we
could get Nick on the network, but it will have to come to him. He is not
in a position to do any promotional work.
I suggest that at this stage of planning we don't worry about how many (WL2K
or Airmail) stations
there are, or where they are located, that can be used to make the wire line
connection outside the Last Mile. Remember the LAST station in the Last
Mile may make that connection over the phone line or by HF to any WL2K
station anywhere... no need for the WL2K station to be in Florida. This
makes the LAST station in the Last Mile the FIRST station outside! If our
Last Mile is wide-spread, we need to be certain we can work HF WL2K stations
at a distance - hundreds of miles.
Concern over not having enough stations on packet that can act as the LAST
station in the Last Mile can be mitigated by planning at the local or groups
of local areas. This is the planning stage we are in now.
For the sake of discussion I will use the County EOC as the
collector/server of tactical messages. Utilizing the layered network, the
EOC routes messages among tactical stations (including hospitals, shelters,
agencies, portables) as well as adjacent County EOCs. If each group of
EOCs (three to five counties) has at least one HF-equipped WL2K vhf packet
BBS
or the packet port of an HF-equipped Airmail station on the network - that
is as many/far as is needed. [All antennas standing tall and emergency power
requirements being understood.]
If, for continuing purpose of discussion, we used the FADCA Districts for
grouping, we would have our dreamed-of spider web of contiguous connections
through
the layered network and at least eight gateways to the HF/wired world. With
the State EOC on the HF network (minimum PacTOR MBO required) any EOC on the
layered network could get a message to the State EOC within a few minutes of
it being entered as data into the first (tactical) computer.
(The use of FADCA districts is for illustrative purposes.)
