Charlie;
I will take a poke at it from what I have.
1. Code is much more up to date.
2. FPAC Linux addes autorouting for the call setup
i.e. you do not need to have the X.121 address to make a call,
the FPAC Linux boxes exchange heard list and the user issues a
connect to a call, the network does the rest providing that
the boxes on each end are FPAC LINUX of course
3. It is supposed to handle UI mode across the network for things like
APRS, TCP etc.
4. Since it talks to the kernel it can also access other kernel features.
5. There are a large number of network tools available to LINUX, much more
so than DOS, allowing you to do all kind of testing and data
gathering.
6. Other protocols can reside with FPAC in the LINUX box so you can support
other activities such as APRS, IP, NetRom, (Insert your favorite
protocol
here) whatever. Gives people a chance to play with other stuff.
Yes the down side is that there is a learning curve for each person that has
not worked with UNIX, but I am finding that it is not so bad and now we are
starting to move to LINUX at work so it is a double plus for me...
Some of the guys over on the other FPAC list; [email protected] can probably
give you some other reasons, that is what is running in France now and it
seems to be pretty bullet proof.
