LAYERED PACKET NETWORK - CENTRAL FLORIDA - UPDATE-STATUS

The Orlando, DeLand, and Daytona Beach switches have been working
flawlessly. (With one exception for two hours when one of my cats had =
pulled
an RS232 cable out of a TNC on the DeLand switch under test here!).=20
The Orlando BBS, KA4GDV, is expected to return to the air early this
month after moving to a new QTH.

Because I was unable to complete the move of the DeLand switch to its
permanent location it will be down from June 5 through 20 while I am out =
of
town. I can't depend on the non-ham house sitter to protect all this =
gear
from the lightning! (We have had 17 inches of rain in less than that =
many
days.)

Links northward through St. Augustine are working 24/7, but links to JAX
have been unavailable part of the daylight time in late June. While UHF
antennas are being raised to improve reliability, the vhf routing has =
been
off during the testing. Return to 24/7 use is anticipated early in July. =
The
computer originally used for the recently upgraded Melbourne switch =
needed
to be replaced. As of the end of June that was still in process and the
switch was down.

HF ARQ (PacTOR I and II) links continue to work between Ft. Myers, Ft.
Pierce, Deltona, and Switzerland (near JAX).

Bad news was received that the new Orlando 15-story site previously =
under
consideration may not be available. A 7th story level there was =
tentatively
offered, but would not be a sufficient improvement over the present site =
in
Maitland. There is some hope that Hal, KK1B, the OARC representative =
might
reopen negotiations. We must, however put the word out for a new site
somewhere in Orange County- preferably in the southern part. Actually, a
location in northern Osceola County should work. Target agl is at least =
150
ft.

Elsewhere - Hollywood through Vero switches are alive and well. The =
switch
at Lake Placid will be moved to the highest point in town. Norm, K4RBR, =
will
be managing it. The switch there will be a major player in the southern
cross-state link. I'm still awaiting word from Lake County that someone
there may become active in establishing a switch between Ocala and =
Tavares.
