Subject: Upcoming Important Events
All
There are some events and information that I think we need to be aware
of. This information can't wait for the April NNJ News email later
this month.
FAIR LAWN ARC wil have a lecture on:
CYBERSECURITY: WHAT YOU CAN DO RIGHT NOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF
The presentation will be held on Friday, April 21, 2017 starting at
7:00 PM at the Fair Lawn Senior Center, 11-05 Gardiner Road in Fair
Lawn, NJ. The event is open to the public.
The presentation will focus on the following:
• What is cybersecurity; why is it important to critical economic
sectors like healthcare?
• What are the current cybersecurity threats?
• What technology is used in cybersecurity?
• How do you stay safe? The human behavior aspect of cybersecurity.
There will be an Exercise covering NNJ and SNJ - ARES and RACES
EXERCISE EXERCISE EXERCISE
Gotham Shield is a Regional Exercise by the Red Cross, funded by FEMA,
to help test how the agency would respond to a major disaster in the NY
region.
Communications wise, the test aims to find out strengths and weaknesses
in response when EMP takes out cell phones and electronics in the
affected areas, roughly a 20 kilometer circle, and there has to be a
response for a mass casualty incident. The exercise will look at what
happens when the phones are out on the commercial side, and how
government nets(800 MHZ and MARS), their support nets (ARES/RACES), and
EmComm and r egular ham nets communicate in passing exercise traffic.
Drill date is Wednesday, April 26th,
WEST ESSEX ARC will host a lecture on Your first HF Station
Mike Luongo, K2NNN, will present Ideas for your First High Frequency
Station at the West Essex ARC on April 19 at 8 pm. This presentation
will discuss setting up an HF station in your house or apartment. It
will include information on transceivers, antennas, and accessories.
The West Essex ARC meets at the Essex Fells Service Building, 2nd
Floor, 307 Runnymede Road, Essex Fells, NJ. The doors will open at 7:30
pm
NEWS FROM THE ARRL
1) The ARRL Executive Committee (EC) has directed that work begin on
finalizing the language of a revised memorandum of understanding
between ARRL and the FCC regarding the Amateur Auxiliary (Official
Observer) program
2) International Marconi Day (IMD) event, this year being held on April
22, 0000-2359 UTC (starting on April 21 in US time zones). All contacts
counting toward the Marconi Award must be made on HF with registered
stations, but other participating stations do not need to be registered
to claim awards.
The event is not a contest but an opportunity for amateurs around the
world to make point-to-point contact with historic Marconi sites using
HF communication techniques descended from those used by Marconi, and
to earn an award certificate for working or hearing a requisite number
of Marconi stations.
There are two categories. Transmitting amateurs attempt to complete
contacts with 15 of the official award stations, while shortwave
listeners attempt to log two-way communications made by 15 of the
official award stations.
Don't forget the Splitrock Hamfest on April 23 in Succasunna, NJ
73 and Happy Holidays
