Members,

One of the VE Exam candidates attending the September 13, 2014 testing
session to become a Technician is doing so because he wants to use
Amateur Radio to play a role in his current project. This is what he has
communicated to me in our correspondences (I like to get to know a
candidate a little before they show up on testing day):

I would also like to talk with you guys about possibly assisting in a
High Altitude Balloon launch. Last year we launched a balloon to about
110,000 feet with cameras attached to study the atmosphere for a 3rd
grade science experiment but we lacked the ability to track in real
time. Based on that, I took up a new hobby launching balloons. We have
upgraded our payload to include a transmitter which will broadcast on
the 70cm band which is the reason why I am pursuing the license. This
allows people from the area to listen in and track the balloon in flight
and upload the data in real time to the tracking site. We will also be
streaming photos using SSDV using RTTY.

Feel free to check out the still images we capture during the first
launch here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=el1ioztbhok and a video
of the launch here.: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yt06tdX7Mvo

I look forward to maybe speaking with you and the club more about the
project.

I have invited him to attend one of our club meetings to meet our
interested members.

73,
Drew, W2OU
ETSNJ Director
