EDITOR'S NOTE
With Thanksgiving just around the corner here in the US, we've seasoned this Fun Friday newsletter with holiday themed content. But before the turkey, how about trying a little ham ... ham radio, that is. Be sure to catch our story on ham radio today and what it has to offer. Also be sure to catch the photos from Barrie Gilbert's home lab, the steam engine made out of glass, and the answers to last week's 5 Engineers question, "What engineering breakthrough are you most thankful for?" Take a break and enjoy a little fun on your Friday. And to all of our friends in the US, happy Thanksgiving a few days early.
TALK TURKEY WITH HAM
Ham radio in the 21st century
Ham radio today differs greatly from that of past years, but it still offers a fascinating way to explore electronics. Here’s a look at how it has changed and what it has to offer both old hams and newcomers alike.

TALES FROM THE CUBE
Tanks a lot!
Solving a test-setup problem that threatened to halt production and initiate an expensive recall was a combination of methodology and luck, and on this occasion luck favored this engineering team.

5 ENGINEERS
We ask, you answer
Welcome to our "5 Engineers" section, where we ask a question and showcase 5 select answers from this newsletter's audience. Last week's question was: What engineering breakthrough are you most thankful for and why? Check out the below 5 answers and scroll down for the next question.
The handheld engineering calculator is one of the greatest advances to engineering in decades. Of course, it killed sales of slide rules, but replaced those with something superior. After the initial introduction came additions of user memory, programmability, and importantly, an advanced low power display. -- J Mading
The transistor, of course. Otherwise, I'd be toting my iPhone around in a shopping cart to carry all the tubes. -- cedguru
Strictly from an engineering viewpoint, I'd have to pick the PC. It has been the driving force for so much innovation, as the demand generator behind Moore's Law, for DRAM and semiconductors in general. Add on its providing the infrastructure for so many engineering tools and nothing else can come close! -- Ratsky
The wheel. It's much easier to get to work with a round wheel than a square block on my civic. Or walking. When I'm going 10 miles uphill, both ways, through the snow, I'd much prefer to go at it in a car with my handy, dandy wheel! -- jbrookley
Time Dilation. As this allows one to promise delivery of projects for yesterday that one starts tomorrow. -- AdolfoM
This week's question is: What gadget are you hoping to get this holiday season?
Post your answer here. And be sure to check back on Friday, December 2, to see if your answer was selected.

Automated Precision Assembly for High-Volume HB LED
Die bonders can perform epoxy die attach at a rate of 1.5 to 4 thousand die per hour, and wire bonders can interconnect complex packages at speeds of more than 10 wires per second. This webinar from Palomar Technologies covers the ultimate goal of an automated precision HB LED assembly — to blend the quality required to support high reliability with the speed needed to support high-volume commercial production.
