Dear kb2loz, Happy to hear from U. Especially that U R getting back into
ham radio.
I own a Yaesu vx5r hand held. It covers 2 - 6 - meters & 440 centimeters.
It will received police, etc. out of the band. However U cannot transmit
out of the ham bands.The rig also gets the local am broadcast stations as
well as the local fm broadcast stations. I purchased this unit about 4
years ago & still works well. However Yaesu has come out with vx7r now.
It does all of the above and does 220 mhz also. The radio is a 5 watt
unit.  However on 220 I believe the power is about 300 milliwatts.
The battery is a lithium battery.  However a wall charger is furnished
with the unit. U can keep ur charger for something else.  Hi.
Let me know what U decide.  By the way I just purchased an Icom 910 unit
for 2 mtr ssb & am having a ball working Glenn wb2lmv in Napanock, New
York. About 75 miles north of my qth.  I know U have a kenwood unit. We
get on just about every evening @ 8pm on a freq of 144260.00 kc.  Maybe U
