I would expect that fault to result in the utility not seeing any data at all.   In that condition the utility does not report that the connected device is not a KAT500 because it can't connect at all.

Please confirm that you saw the message "Unexpected Device - Connected device does not appear to be an Elecraft KAT500" when the TX and RX data lines had both failed.  In my experience this fault can only result if the utility is connected to a port that is receiving data but it's not the data the utility was requesting.
