Maybe you could put a tone generator on the foot switch to bleep yourself. Leave VOX on, but stomp on the pedal when you encounter a lid. :-)

More seriously, I could see a foot switch as a VOX inhibit. Broadcasters have a “cough button” to mute an otherwise live mic.
