I realize you're talking about receive audio, but a few years ago Joe 
w4tv recommended SSB transmit settings I thought I'd mention while the 
general topic is active.  I've had good reports when using them and good 
results working dx.  As a result back then I incorporated them into a 
little EQ program I wrote so that I don't have to relay on memory.  (I'm 
mainly a cw op and some time can elapse between ssb sessions.)
