That is why I first ask how the transceiver behaves when connected to a 
dummy load.
Even that is not conclusive because there is always the possibility of a 
faulty coax between the transceiver and the dummy load, but it does 
usually rule out a fault in the transceiver and force attention to the 
antenna system.

Bad connections in the antenna system can cause all kinds of 'strange 
happenings'.
