My response to the earlier posting was going to be ...this hobby has a ton
of different facets ...ragchewing is fine ...I'm just not that chatty in
real life to begin with ...let alone on the air ...Took to CW real quickly
because of that I guess ..
For some of us ...our interest is in what a lot of the world knows as
"radiosport" ...contesting ..dxing ...and the like ...and the contacts we
have are the way we keep score ...for others it is as AB7E says ..about
playing with different communications techniques and the interplay between
equipment, propagation, and antennas ...and lately ...as much as some folks
don't think it is really Ham Radio ..it is about the linking of Computer and
RF technology in novel ways. Ragchewing is great for those who enjoy it
..so is a JT65 HF or EME Contact consisting of short bursts of station data.
None is better than the other.

Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Radio
I don't need a radio to talk to friends, and in fact I could argue pretty
persuasively that I have more varied and interesting friends
outside of ham radio than within it. Ham radio does, however, give me
the opportunity to learn more about electronics ... and antennas ... and
propagation ... and communication techniques. The fact that I am able to do
that with like minded friends is a plus, of course, especially since none of
them are presumptuous enough to tell me what I should derive from it.
