I don't need a radio to talk to friends, and in fact I could argue
pretty persuasively that I have more varied and interesting friends
outside of ham radio than within it. Ham radio does, however, give me
the opportunity to learn more about electronics ... and antennas ... and
propagation ... and communication techniques. The fact that I am able
to do that with like minded friends is a plus, of course, especially
since none of them are presumptuous enough to tell me what I should
derive from it.
