Brian,
If you cannot locate the pin 1 designation on the silkscreen, then look
at the solder pads. In most cases, the solder pads are rectangular,
except for pin 1 which is usually round. There are some instances where
most of the solder pads are round, but in that case, pin 1 is
rectangular or square.
On the component, the dot may be any color - usually the same color as
the value marking. If you hold the R-Pak wih the pins down and the
value designation facing you, pin 1 is normally on the left. The color
of the dot can change from manufacturer to manufacturer, and even from
time to time with the same manufacturer. Yes, it was black when the
manual was written.
