Dick,
That article is over a year old, and if the upgraded (not just updated
for security) Thunderbird versions that have occurred over the past year
is any indication, they are still doing serious development work on it.
Look at the major version number - those are upgrades. Other releases
that only update the decimal part of the release number are minor
changes and bug fixes.
If you look at the Mozilla site product list, it certainly appears they
are actively continuing development of Thunderbird.
Mozilla does their support mostly through the user community for all
their products (like most other open source products) - they do not have
staff to answer emails or phone calls, but the support is quite good
through the user community. Another advantage of Thunderbird is that it
is multi-platform so if you change your OS, you can transport your email
easily.
