Don, I asked David at Elecraft Customer Support about using a key line
interrupter.
Here is his answer:
"you do not need to use a separate Key Line Interrupter for your
application.  When you use the 15 pin cable between the K3 and the KAT500,
it will provide band data tracking the KAT500 with the K3's band changes. 
However, pin 10 is a Key Line signal from the K3.  The good news is that
this Key Line is implemented in parallel with the KEY OUT signal from the
K3, passing through the KAT500 RCA connectors and on to the Heath amp. So,
you're good to go with the configuration you have."

This is why I made my cable and used it without a key line interrupter.
Of course maybe I have misinterpreted David's answer, or he did similar with
my question/setup. 

Dick, K6KR seems to present a solution that will work so I will answer his
post now.
