I do not understand the need for all this commotion.  My KX3 has two 
thumbscrews on each end.  Loosen all 4 and the 2 halves are easily 
separated.  Remove or insert batteries and then reassemble.  No new 
screws needed, they are supplied as part of the stock assembly.
