The nice thing about usb-ser adapters is the easy to see port allocation
looked up under device manager (windows)
Win 7 : Path
Control Panel\System and Security\System
Select device manager
You will see under Ports (Com & LPT)
USB Serial Port (Com x)
X being whatever port number it is. Ensure this matches the Port number
selected in K3Util.

Subject: [Elecraft] K3 lost comm with K3Util
My K3 has lost communication with the K3 utility program. Although properly
configured (comm port) the Utility cannot read the versions of firmware in
the rig nor update them. The recent improvements in 4.51 have me wanting to
update and try it out.
Oddly enough my logger, N3FJP still communicates fine with the K3 on the
same comm port (10) I have the K3utility attempt to connect on. I do shut
down the logger before trying K3Util and have rebooted, etc. with no luck.
The computer is a laptop. I have purchased another USB converter
recommended on the list and still have the same problems. I do not have a
"real" serial port available and do not expect to have one.
This problem has crept in over the past year or so. Used to be it would
happen on occasion to the logger and K3Util but recently I have not had a
problem with the logger and the K3Util has been non functional for over a
month.
I wanted to look for others with a similar experience and perhaps cure here
before heading to support.
