Undoubtedly the sub-rcvr is a lot more convenient for this purpose,
but you can follow the split action pretty well using dual VFO and REV
button on a single receiver. With a little practice you can spin the
VFO with your thumb while momentarily depressing the REV button with
the middle or index finger.
On CW if you have a good ear for pitch it is pretty easy to track the
stations that the DX is working and repeatedly set your transmit
frequency to where he is moving. LOCK your VFOA so you don't detune it
in the heat of the pursuit. Also, keep your VFOB filter wide open so
you can hear a good swath of the pileup at once. This is a lot of fun.
