Yes, and if the speaker does not have an airtight seal between it and the
baffle (the cover on the rig in this case) the mid and lower frequencies
will be highly attenuated.
When the cone moves forward on a bare speaker, the air pressure created
simply moves around the edges and fills the partial vacuum created behind.
The end result is no sound pressure waves leaving the speaker. The only
waves created are those high enough in frequency that the outer part of the
speaker acts as a self-baffle, leaving only a small center portion of the
speaker to produce a sound pressure wave.

That is true for the standard speaker, but with the KBT1, the speaker is
changed to a smaller one that has no mounting screws, it just sits with its
magnet settled into the hole in the battery bracket - it needs to have a
foam washer around its magnet to kee3p it from creating "rattlie"
noises.
