Thanks to everyone that answered my OT question about getting capacitor goop off of PC 
boards. I managed to remove about 8 leaking SMD aluminum can capacitors without destroying 
it, cleaned it with alcohol flux remover, then distilled water, and replaced the caps. 
Success! My old TS850S works again.

This used to be THE contest radio. But time and technology have passed it by. It's worth 
keeping, though. It has a good general coverage receiver and dynamic range similar to the 
K2. And it's not a bad SSB rig, if you like that stuff.

Apparently the board -- the carrier oscillator board -- is famous for having been built 
with caps that go bad after 20 years or so (my radio was built in 1991). This would never 
happen to an Elecraft product!
