No downside at all. The "upside" is that you understand how you set
it and can then read it intelligibly.
If you have the preamp on, you know it will read about 2 S units higher,
and if you have the attenuator on it will read 1 1/2 to 2 S-units lower
- that is unless you have set ABS mode on, and then the reading is not
changed with PRE or ATT on or off.
