Not again! USB is very operating system dependent and incurs a
significant overhead cost in licensing as well as software cost
for multiple operating systems. In addition, not all controllers
have built-in USB support (nearly all PICs have a native serial
port) and the hardware/development cost is significantly for
those devices with embedded USB ports. Finally, the bill of
materials is more expensive with USB and the final product
must be physically larger to accommodate the added USB port.
All of the above make RS-232 the right choice for these products
and continued "why no USB port" complaints extremely unwelcome.
