Do you have a computer with true serial RS-232?  If so try downloading the
latest K3 Utility (1.3.9.12) to it.

After physically disconnecting the power plug on the rear of the K3 for at
least 1 minute, connect the serial cable to the K3 only, turn the K3 power
on and then try to run the Utility.

It sounds like you have some sort of problem with your USB connection (which
seems to be a common problem).  There's a link near the top of the software
page above with the latest recommended USB driver.
