[Elecraft] Heil HC-5 & K2

Bill,

That is the menu setting for setting the carrier balance potentiometer
(SSBa=bal). While it could work for some purposes, I for one would not
trust it for a good evaluation of the transmitted audio. An external
receiver will not only give you the sound of the actual transmitted
audio, but can also tell you that the passband of the SSB FL1 filter has
been properly positioned for your particular voice, and can also tell
you if you have done the dial calibration correctly - If you hear a good
quality received signal at the same frequency the K2 is set to, then
both the K2 dial calibration and the position of the SSB FL1 filter
passband is correct. Other aspects of the transmitted could also be
evaluated, such as tailoring the audio response of the mic and adjusting
the compression, but it may be difficult to evaluate that while you are
speaking due to the effects of bone conduction. It would be best to
record the received signal and then play it back.

I would only use the carrier balance menu parameter to make a quick
judgement about the compression setting selected.
