This is just a guess.  Early in the 60's, IBM used the "slash" as part of their control 
language to their OS on the 650, the 360 series, etc.  Who amongst us doesn't 
remember having to put a "slash star" [columns 1 and 2] as the last card in the deck 
to go into the reader?  Who wants to say "virgule askerisk"?!

As I recall, the USAF taught me to say "stroke" but I got out of the AF quite a few 
years ago... like 50!
