Ken,
You do not need the K60XV unless you want to leave the HF antenna
connected to the K2 while operating with the transverter.
If you do not want to use the KIO2 to integrate the K2 and the XV
transverter, you can key the transverter by adding the Amplifier Keying
Circuit to your K2. However, the operating convenience added with the
KIO2 installed may make it worth the addition.
There is an alternative to the KIO2 as well if you never desire computer
control of your K2. The transverter does not need the TXD and RXD
signals that are provided in the KIO2, but the other internal K2 signals
(8R, 12CTRL, AUXBUS, and VRFDET) are needed to integrate the transverter
with the K2 operation. Some K2 owners who have mounted their KPA100 in
a separate enclosure have created a substitute for the KIO2 - that same
substitute will work for the transverters - check the reflector archives
if that solution interests you.
So you have several choices - if the cost is the greatest concern, you
may want to look into the KIO2 alternative as having the lower cost with
normal operating convenience. The Amp Keying circuit is also low cost,
but you lose the operating convenience provided by the KIO2 (or substitute).
The K60XV is handy if you switch between the transverter bands and HF
bands because the HF antenna connection stays the same and you have
independent transmit and receive paths between the K2 and the transverter.
