Deni,
It wouldn't be right if I didn't chime in a few comments about the
MacIntosh.
One of the wonderful things about the Apple OS X (the "X" is the roman
numeral for 10) Operating system
is it's BSD Unix based. That means any of the linux programs should compile.
Personally, I use a mac mini in the shack. I got this one new in '05 back
when they used the Power PC procesors.
If you want a fresh start with a completely new system, I would recommend an
iMac.
The idea behind the mac mini is to use your existing PC peripherals and
maybe switch to macs a little cheaper.
I got my mini and then bought all new peripherals. In hind sight, I
should have just got the imac as it comes with a new keyboard and mouse and
the monitor and computer are built together.
Macs hold onto their usefullness and value MUCH longer that any PC on the
market.
Just look at ebay, an ibook laptop from around 2002 will sell for about
$350. Still worth every penny and with an OS upgrade, just as useful as the
day it rolled off the assembly line.
Switching to mac was the best thing I ever did regarding computers. I no
longer have to "work" on my computer just to get it to work. I simply just
use it and it does what I want it to.
For digital modes Kok Chen W7AY, has a wonderful program called:
cocoaModem.
In reality, I haven't had ANY trouble finding software for the mac that has
a "PC" equivalent.
The new macs are intel based and can even run windows (yuk) if needed.
I just wish my K2 worked like my mac! I must have messed up somewhere in the
build...
