Tom,
If I understand your problem correctly, check to be certain the KX1 is
transmitting on the frequency that you believe it is. If it is
attempting to transmit well out of the band indicated on the dial, that
would explain your high SWR readings. A dummy load will indicate an
SWR=1 no matter what the actual frequency is, an antenna will not.
If it is transmitting on the correct frequency, then please explain your
setup for each piece of gear - and that includes the coax pieces between
each piece of gear. Secondly, what does the MFJ259 indicate when
connected to the same coax end that you attach the KX1 to (without
removing the SWR meter). You could have a problem with any piece of
coax or with the SWR meter as well as the KX1.
The details of your setup are needed before I can make any positive
statements - all the above is pure speculation.
