Upgraded the older K3, #311 to current upgrades and firmware. Also added the
PR6. Finally getting a chance to spend some time playing on 6M. A couple
issues. These issues do not happen on the lower bands, only 6M. Looking for
feedback and suggestions. I am assuming what I am seeing is not normal.
1. VFO A & B. If the internal preamp and the PR6 are off there is no noise
when turning the VFO's. When I turn on the internal preamp there is some low
level noise when turning the main VFO or the sub-receiver VFO.
When I turn on the PR6 the noise increases to about S1-2 when turning either
VFO . The noise level is sufficient to cover up a weak signal.
When I turn on both the PR6 and the internal preamp the noise level
increases another S-unit. In both cases the noise level is higher on the
main receiver than the sub-receiver.
2. Here is what happened when listening to some beacons this morning. I
tuned in a beacon on 50.075 that was S7 with no preamps. If I tuned to
50.074.2 I could here the station S1-2. But it sounded chirpy and raspy. If
I turn on the PR6 the signal increased to S9 +5 on 50.075 and the signal at
50.074.2 became louder and more chirpy and raspy.
Also tried injecting a signal. It seems everything is fine and I don't hear
the signal anywhere else as long as I keep the input signal below about
S4-5. Once I get above about S5 whether increasing the injected signal or
using PR6 or the internal preamp I start hearing this "image" about .8KHZ
below the carrier.
Did these comparisons next to a PRO III. Wanted to verify these issues were
rig and not externally related.
Also verified NB and NR were off.
Any ideas? Figure I would throw this out on the reflector before sending it
off to Elecraft support in case it is operator error.
Tnx
