Look at the right side of the LCD display to see what mode you are in.
Yes, VOX is remembered by mode.  Switch to the mode you wish (I assume 
CW) and hold the VOX button - it is a toggle, same action to turn it 
off.  The LCD has an indicator for VOX on or off.  See the diagram of 
the LCD display in the manual to locate the VOX icon.

You may want to go through the manual identifying all those items on the 
display and front panel - that is often an informative exercise.  The 
other useful exercise is to read the list of menu items to see what 
functions/features of the radio can be changed in the menu.
