I think it was noted in this month's RadCom. PA0FRI has an interesting design called a "S-Match" that looks easy to build and possibly easy to motorize as well.

Another article that is well worth reading and may apply to some questions raised in this thread is by Rudy Severns, N6LF. It brings some interesting test data that suggests that longer may not be better in some instances. Definite food for thought and interesting reading.
