Larry,

I guess it depends on how you operate. I'm also a DX/Contester
(mostly the latter) and I never found the alt I/II useful for my style
of operating either.

I have the BW pre-set along with the frequency in the number keypad
(which I use as my "bandswitch"). When I'm on CW, I is equal to 600hz
and II = 400 hz. Those two work for me 99% of the time. Of course, I
do like to hear what is going on around me too, so I rarely use
narrower settings. Since I don't really twiddle the BW settings, I
don't need/use this feature.

So who uses it? Apparently some guys twiddle the BW a lot and have
(for lack of a better word) "complained" on the reflector about
"getting lost" in terms of
where am I" and also with respect to which way to turn the DSP knob
after they have twiddled it. By utilizing alt I/II (or whatever it is
now renamed), it "gets them back to home base" instead of back to the
BW "last used."

Since I just use the "stock" I/II settings which I first set up and
since I don't twiddle the BW much (if at all), it does not matter for
me (and maybe not for you either).

As they say, YMMV
