Another way to look at this is as an "audible spectrum display" in which 
you use your ears instead of your eyes to "see" nearby stations (their 
offset and their relative strength) while you are focused on your QSO 
(or trying to have a QSO!) on your spotting frequency.

Thus, in addition to the other benefits, it provides a kind of 
audio-based spectrum scope for visually impaired CW operators.
