I use Firefox and T-bird.  This occasionally happens to me.  Then I 
"discovered" the Edit.Rewrap function.  It rewraps the text to whatever 
size I have the window set up to, or 80 characters, whichever is less. 
It does preserve "hard returns" in the text.
