Hi Chris,
I did this last year as I had a terrible head cold so wanted to try to save my voice & energy a bit. I use a Heil ProSet Plus headset and the interface I used was one of the West Mountain Radio RigBlaster interfaces. The interface goes between the rig, headset and computer.
On the other hand I've also tried using a small digital voice recorder with a Y-adapter in the past. I didn't like the way it worked as I had it hooked up because of a couple of things. I seem to have had the volume turned all the way up on the DVR audio output. Was I getting distortion at such a high level? Why did it need to be up at such a high level? I had an audio to high-impedance transformer (8:1000) inline as well but that didn't seem to matter. I also heard the audio coming out of the microphone. That can't be good!
So, use a RigBlaster or equivalent interface, or design your own, and you'll be much better off than the Y-adapter to jack in the audio in parallel.
