Mike,

Unless you have good IDS connectors to stick the wires into, yes those 
things are tricky.

Personally I prefer the straight across computer jumpers where 
applicable and I use wirewrap for the rest, but for those who do not 
have wirewrap tools and wire, that is not a really good solution.

You could solder to the header, but that defeats the purpose.  If you 
have to resort to soldering, I suggest that you solder small jumpers on 
the other side of the board (yes, you have to remove the front panel 
board from the chassis to do that).

If you are using the ICOM or Kenwood mic configuration, using some 
jumpers and then soldering on the front of the board is not really hard 
because there are only a few wires that are not straight across, but if 
you are trying to wire it for the Yaesu mic pinout, things get more 'messy'.

Sorry, but I don't have a crisp answer other than wirewrap.
