[Elecraft] KXI Audio?

Fred,
Good luck with your endeavor. The KX1 will work with an efficient external
speaker. Check the archives for Wayne's Field Day 2006 operation comments -
he did use an external speaker because he had a guest who wanted to hear
what was going on.
You certainly can install the KXB3080 yourself. The instructions are
correct and careful to give all the information needed. Because of the
tight physical space, my advice is to follow those instructions "to the
letter" - wind the toroids, strip the leads and spread the turns exactly
like the instructions and diagrams indicate. If you do not have a
desoldering tool with a long slender tip on it, you may end up damaging
adjacent parts during the removal process. In that case, I suggest crushing
the component to be removed and removing one lead at a time. A stainless
steel needle is handy for opening the holes after removing the old leads
(just don't burn your fingers, the needle will get hot - glue it into the
end of a dowel to serve as a handle).

Don W3FPR
