[Elecraft] KXI Audio?

I've never smelled a solder beacon (nor heard of one) but I know what you're
getting at. ;-) I built a KX1 for exactly the same reason.

The KX1 has a headphone jack that would drive powered speakers like you use
for your computer.

The 30/80 options is, in my opinion, the hardest Elecraft kit to build and
get right. It's far from impossible; it's just challenging. There is a trace
to cut, two situations where pads on the board are mislabelled, and torroids
that require fairly precise stripping to avoid bad contacts and shorts. One
of the boards mounts fairly easily, but the other has to sit in a pretty
tight location and has to be installed in such a way so as to avoid
interfering with parts from the ATU. There is a wire that passes from one
side of this board to the other and has a high probability of shorting
against a pad that it passes right next to.

There are also several parts that have to be removed from the main board
(and one that is moved to the other side of the board) when you install the
30/80 kit. You'll want to have good solder removal capability for this part
of the project.

It can't be too bad -- I bought a second one to build for fun. :-)

Subject: [Elecraft] KXI Audio?

The smell of solder beacons! Finished K2 #5422
early summer. KXI looks interesting. But I
have a couple of questions -

Does the KXI portable transceiver - support an
external speaker, for listening?

Why would it be necessary to "hire another
builder", to do the 80/30 option? Is it
difficult to build or fit into the KX1?
Or difficult to test?

I like the idea that I could use the KX1 to
also listen to some SSB and some SWL.

Thanks,
Fred
