Ha! We live with this stuff for so long we forget that it's not "obvious"
too. 

Along those lines you'll often see that pair called "UHF Connectors". Well,
they were the state of the art in the 1930's when Amphenol developed them,
and back then "UHF" started at about 30 MHz. The VHF designation hadn't
appeared yet. There was just Low Frequency, Medium Frequency (roughly the
U.S. A.M. 'standard broadcast band' and the Marine band just below it), High
Frequency (the 'short waves') and Ultra High Frequency (where it was a
challenge to make anything work).

And over half a century later they are still excellent connectors for what
used to be 'UHF'.

Yes, the SO-239 and PL-159 designations originate from the US Army Signal
Corps component nomenclature system that was in effect before mid-WWII.
Therefore, you won't find a logical paring of socket SO-239 to a mating plug
PL-239, for this or any other socket-plug combo.  That would have been be
too easy.
