Yes, the SO-239 and PL-159 designations originate from the US Army Signal Corps component nomenclature system that was in effect before mid-WWII.  Therefore, you won't find a logical paring of socket SO-239 to a mating plug PL-239, for this or any other socket-plug combo.  That would have been be too easy.
