And yet another view -

I would like to see daylight time made permanent, as in year round, with 
no semi-annual adjustment.  I believe the vast majority of people (not 
all, or course) prefer longer evening daylight hours, and if you really 
think about it, Winter is when we really need some extra light in the 
afternoon/evening.   This was actually tried at least once, during the 
1973 oil crisis, and it did result in some degree of energy saving, 
although I don't know exactly how much.  I clearly remember the year we 
went to daylight time and did not change in the fall, and the longer 
days in the Winter were really nice. 

Of course, we all know that there is no free lunch, and the extra 
sunlight in the afternoon comes at the expense of  longer morning 
darkness, but for many of us, it is a good trade.

In the summer time, up this way, we get 18-24 hours of sun, depending on 
where you are, so daylight savings time isn't that big a deal.  At 
Prudhoe Bay, where the Alaska oil fields are, the sun comes up on 
(roughly) the 20th of May and goes down on (roughly) the 5th of August - 
and is up 24/7 between those dates.  Weird. You can take a nap after 
supper,  wake up at 10:00, and literally not know, at least from looking 
out the window,  if you have had a 2 hour nap or are really late for work!

Of course, we could put the entire world on Greenwich time,  and some 
places would have "noon" at "midnight", but people would get used to it, 
wouldn't they?
