In my business (marine HF) we use 3" x .011" copper strap. I have found that
braid acts lick a wick and absorbs moisture then rots from the inside out. I
hadn't considered it becoming lots of individual conductors, but that makes
sense.
Round conductors are bad news due to inductance inherent in round
conductors - all the more reason to use flat "strap" with lots of surface
area and avoid as many bends or folds as possible. If you are unable to
easily locate flat strap you might try a garden supply that specializes in
organic or pesticide free practices - they use it to fight snails.
