Wow, has this subject been beaten to death. Warp speed , Scotty
................... aye aye captain.

You should get a polarity checker from home depot or wall mart. It has leds
and plugs into a 3 PRONG socket and tells you if the socket is wired
correctly.

The wire from the static safe mat and strap should connect to ground. (
station
ground, ground rod ground, power plug ground ) All grounds should read the
same.     within reason.

Wear the strap all the time as you will forget about it and pick something
up and say OOPS :-) without it. As others have mentioned 70 or more times
the strap and mat wire has 1Meg resistor in series !

ESD can damage a part and cause early failure even though it seems ok to
start with.
