[Elecraft] K2 Remote Base

Hi Tom.

Last year I started work on a program to operate the K2 over a network,
called K2 Net. You can see this early version on my web page. The current
version is much improved, although I can't vouch for its reliability when
used across the Internet rather than a local network.

Unfortunately, shortage of time for hobby activities has meant that I have
not managed to complete this version, never mind find the time to make a
setup for it, write documentation for it, update web pages and so on. With
a holiday coming up I'm unlikely to find the time in the next few weeks
either. But when it is eventually released I think you will find the
program has the features you are looking for to allow remote access via the
Internet.

In the current version there is now secure authentication to prevent
unauthorized access to the remote software, 3 levels of access control so
you can allow people to log in for receive only, or RX/TX but no rights to
change menu settings, and built in audio streaming with much reduced
latency compared with the version you can download from the site. The
controller clients now have a CW macro facility, similar to data mode
programs, and a simple logger that records contacts as an ADIF file both at
the client end and the server end. Clients can store details of multiple
servers, so it would even be possible to have a network of online K2s that
people could log in to, if the owners wanted to make their radios
accessible to others and publish their IP addresses.

Sorry to whet your appetite when the program isn't available, but the way
things are, I have to concentrate my efforts on work that actually pays the
bills at the moment.

I have a copy of N4PY's software program, and it is amazing to watch the K2
respond to the USB tuning knob. Now, I want to take it all one step
further, and remote this K2, or it's replacement, ( in either case, I will
be building another K2). My work location is a great spot for VHF (I want
to operate on 6 ssb ), and I have room for some HF antennas, although my
home location is adequate there.
My question is, has anyone else remoted the K2 via the Internet, and if so,
what programs are you using for handling the audio? Echo Link and I link
seemed to be suited for other uses.
I figured, as usual, someone on this list has been there, done that.
