That's not a bad idea. I use a 10-cell AA battery case with about a
six-inch cable to the K1. I use wide rubber bands to firmly secure the
cells in the case. A more elegant completely enclosed unit of about the
same size would make a great Elecraft option.
I use 2100 mA-hr NiMH cells, and get a fully charged pack voltage of about
14 volts. The size and weight is considerably less than a SLA battery of
similar capacity. For longer spells of portable activity, I use 4.5 or 7
A-hr SLA batteries.
I firmly prefer external batteries. I completely removed my KBT1 option and
returned to the better looking and sounding original top cover and speaker
assembly. I don't like the idea of possible chemical leakage that is
possible from the KBT1, since nothing is there to isolate any such leakage
to the KBT1 battery assembly.
